Women's Soccer falls, 4-3 in overtime, to Armstrong Atlantic State

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Newberry College lost in heart breaking fashion, 4-3 in overtime, against Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday in non-conference women's soccer action.

The crucial South Region matchup was decided at the 94:38 mark when Armstrong Atlantic's Shana Neves put in a rebound to give the Pirates (11-2-0 overall) the victory.

Newberry (6-6-2 overall) was never short of chances, and opened the scoring early on a 40-yard chip by Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas).

AASU would take a 2-1 halftime lead on goals from Emily Latner in the 26th minute, and Kristin Savoy in the 33rd minute.

The Lady Indians fought back to tie the game in the 57th minute, when Woiwode received a pass from Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England) on the left side of the penalty area, and booted the ball into the back of the net.

Newberry took the lead in the 79th minute, when Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career. A series of low passes across the penalty area from Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska) and Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) found the foot of Landgrebe, who snuck the ball inside the right post to give Newberry the 3-2 advantage.

But Armstrong Atlantic scored the equalizer in the 84th minute, when a low, skipping shot from Jessica Chipple eluded the grasp of Newberry keeper Johanna Rathbun (Bedford, Texas).

In overtime, Newberry came inches away from winning when a shot from Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) caromed off the cross bar. AASU sealed the victory with the Neves rebound goal a minute later.

The match was evenly contested as Armstrong Atlantic only outshot Newberry 15-14. Tarra Kohler made seven saves for the Pirates, while starter Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) made two saves in 20 minutes played for Newberry.

The Lady Indians close out their home schedule on Thursday, when they host Brevard College for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
