Men's Soccer scores seconds from full time to pull out 4-3 win over Pfeiffer

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Philip Tanner knocked in the game-winning goal with only 10.5 seconds on the clock to give Newberry College a 4-3 win over Pfeiffer University in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday afternoon.

Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) scored the first three Newberry goals for his second consecutive hat trick. Ogunseye also picked up an assist, giving him 14 points in two matches this week.

Newberry elevates its record to 8-4-0 overall.

Ogunseye opened the scoring after running on to a long through ball from Brandon Baker (Conway, S.C.) on the right side in the 11th minute.

Goalkeeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) picked up an assist along with Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) in the 16th minute when Linn's long boot from a goal kick was headed into Ogunseye's path by Taylor. Ogunseye chipped the ball in off the left post to give Newberry an early 2-0 advantage.

But Pfeiffer (6-5-0 overall) fought back, scoring three goals in a row.

Jon Baxter received a pass from Michael Sobolewski in the 21st minute, and put the ball in the back of the net to pull a goal back.

An own goal by Newberry in the 50th minute tied the game up, and the Falcons looked to have scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute when Cihan Nuhoglu blasted a shot past Newberry's Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) to give Pfeiffer a 3-2 lead with only eight minutes in regulation.

Newberry roared back in the 87th minute when Ogunseye collected his hat trick by scoring on a deflected shot from close range, tying the match.

Tanner (New Hope, S.C.) won the game when Baker crossed in from the right side, and Ogunseye flicked the header to Tanner, who rocketed the shot in the back of the net with 10.5 seconds on the clock.

Pfeiffer goalkeeper Tyler Vaughan made seven saves on the day, while Linn had six and Dieterich had three for the Indians. Newberry outshot Pfeiffer 18-13 in the match.

Newberry's next match comes on Wednesday, October 11 at 4 p.m. when the Indians host No. 5 USC Upstate for Senior Day. Pfeiffer hosts Roberts Wesleyan on Monday at 2 p.m.
