Freshman Lorena Maia sets record in loss to Augusta State

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. In a grueling five game match, Newberry College lost the final game of the season to Augusta State in five tumultuous games. After dropping game one 30-20, Newberry (4-29) stormed back winning games two and three with scores of 30-25 and 30-26.

However, Augusta State (13-20) returned to game four with a rally of their own, taking a 30-19 victory. In the final game, Newberry fell behind early with deficits of 5-2 and 7-4. The scarlet and gray battled back with kills by junior Cara Coleman and freshman Lorena Maia to finish out a 4-0 run. The Jaguars proved to be too powerful down the stretch, knocking off the Lady Indians 15-11.

With Maias kill in the final game, the freshman from Belo Horizonte, Brazil passed Nichole Richmonds previous record of 390 kills in a season to become Newberry Colleges most prolific hitter in her first season. Maias 391 kills sits on top of the record book and with a good showing in the conference tournament on Saturday, Maia has a chance to be the first Lady Indian to record 400 kills in a season.

Maias match high 23 kills was a highlight from the season finale, but the Newberry volleyball program also paid tribute to the two graduating seniors Jessica Lipsi and Jessica Lopez.

Lipsi and Lopez finished their careers in fine fashion, literally as the entire Newberry squad tye-dyed their socks orange for a Halloween treat for fans in attendance.

With 10 kills and 12 digs, Lipsi continued the consistent all around play that Newberry fans have been treated to the last four years.

Jessica Lopez showcased her athleticism and versatility with 24 assists, 17 digs, five kills, three assisted blocks and a service ace.

For Augusta State, senior Sarah Lobstein provided the punch with 20 kills on 58 attacks while also scratching out a team high 23 digs.

Freshman Jessica Howard chipped in 15 kills and was a force at the net recording seven solo blocks and assisted on two others.

Newberry College begins the South Atlantic Conference Tournament as the sixth seed this Saturday at 12:20 p.m. in Wingate, N.C. versus Catawba College. The tournament is being held at Wingate University.
