NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College free safety Derrell Mills has picked up another honor for this past week, earning National Defensive-Player-of-the-Week accolades from d2football.com.
Mills, a sophomore, had a career day in the Indians’ 27-23 victory over Tusculum on Saturday. He registered a career-best 16 tackles, eight of which came as solos. Mills also intercepted a pass and had a pass breakup. Most importantly, however, the Gray Court, SC native forced a fumble with 50 seconds remaining in the contest and raced 40 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
Mills is currently third on the team in tackles with 39. He leads the team as well as the South Atlantic Conference in interceptions with six.
