GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Derrell Mills' fumble recovery for a touchdown with 50 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner as the 15th-ranked Newberry College Indians defeated Tusculum 27-23 on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Newberry moves to 9-0 and 5-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.Tusculum drops to 5-4 and 2-3 in the league.
Tusculum used a nine-play 80-yard drive to go up 6-0.Pioneer quarterback Corey Russell found Travis Oliver open on a slant pass for the touchdown.The extra point attempt was blocked by Carlnel Williams.
On the Indians second-drive, Josh Stepp was hit and fumbled on the one-yard line.That set up Tusculum�s next score, a one-yard quarterback sneak by Russell to make the score 13-0.
Newberry cut into the lead at 13-6 when Stepp found Charles Brandon open for a nine-yard touchdown pass with 11:15 remaining in the second quarter.
To begin the second half, the Pioneers forced a fumble on the opening kickoff and later scored on a 19-yard field goal by Glen Black to make the score 16-6.
The Indians moved to within three points at 16-13 at the 5:39 mark in the third quarter when Stepp lofted a pass into the end zone that was hauled in by Tymere Zimmerman for a 15-yard touchdown.
The Indians regained the lead at 20-16 when Cory Smalls dived in from two yards out with 11:58 remaining the game.
Tusculum countered with a 15-play 80 yard touchdown drive that was capped off with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Russell to Travis Oliver, giving the Pioneers a 23-20 lead with 5:01 remaining in the game.
With 50 seconds remaining in the game and Tusculum, attempting to run out the clock, Mills stripped Patrick King of the ball and raced 40 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
Stepp finished the game 20-of-35 for 270 yards and a touchdown.Zimmerman caught five passes for 49 yards and a score.
Mills finished the game with 16 total tackles, eight coming as solos.
Russell finished 15-of-28 for 166 yards and two touchdowns for Tusculum.
The Indians will host Lenoir-Rhyne at Setzler Field at 7:00 pm next Saturday.
