Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. � Despite a valiant effort from the Lady Indians, Newberry College (3-27) failed to get back on track against the Lady Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University (19-11) Tuesday evening. A small but raucous crowd of 166 cheered in vain as the scarlet and gray fell in three games with scores of 30-23, 30-23, and 30-24.
Newberry received an excellent showing from outside hitter Lorena Maia. The freshman from Belo Horizonte, Brazil chalked up 17 kills with no attack errors. In the last two matches, Maia has only four errors compared with 33 kills.
Junior Laurie Barman provided a secondary option tallying 11 kills while setting duties were split up between senior Jessica Lopez and freshman Kilee Ruppe. Lopez added five kills to her 18 assists and Ruppe chipped in 12 assists and a service ace.
Senior Jessica Lipsi, while playing libero for the first time this season, displayed great athleticism while scratching out a team high 13 digs.
For Lincoln Memorial, the freshman duo of Amanda Horenkamp and Alison Hess combined for 24 kills to lead the Lady Railsplitter attack. Freshman setter Amber Vanderlin garnered 27 assists in the Lincoln Memorial triumph.
The Lady Indians return to the court this Friday with a 7 p.m. bout against Lenoir-Rhyne College at Eleazer Arena.
