Pioneers dodge Lady Indian attack

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. � Tusculum College defeated Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action with a three game win on Friday evening with game scores of 30-17, 30-27, and 31-29. The Pioneers (18-8, 7-4 SAC) struggled against the Newberry attack in the final two games, but eked out their second straight in conference victory.

Newberry fell to 3-25 on the season and 2-9 in SAC play as the Lady Indians failed in an effort to link consecutive wins for the first time this season.

Tusculum�s Vivian Lacy established the Pioneer attack with 13 kills on 32 total attacks with just five attack errors. Setter Stacey Ray served up 29 set assists to compliment six digs, two service aces and a kill.

For Newberry, freshman hitter Lorena Maia spearheaded the offense with 12 kills. Senior Jessica Lopez dished out 27 assists along with a game high 13 digs. Lopez also added three kills, a service ace, and a solo block, but was guilty of five ball handling errors.

Senior Jessica Lipsi and junior Laurie Barman struggled for consistency combining for 15 kills but also committing 13 attack errors.

The scarlet and gray continue a tour of Tennessee clashing with the Carson Newman Lady Eagles on Saturday morning. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
