Box Score CLINTON, S.C. � After a tenuous 18-game losing streak, Newberry College volleyball defeated arch-rival Presbyterian College in three games with scores of 30-26, 30-24, and 30-18.
Earlier this season, the Lady Indians broke an 18 year drought against the Blue Hose and the scarlet and gray left no doubt on Tuesday night in Clinton.
Newberry (3-24, 2-8 SAC) excelled in the service game recording a season high 16 service aces as a team. The freshman duo of Lorena Maia and Jennamarie Lesky peppered the Blue Hose with four each, while seniors Jessica Lopez and Jessica Lipsi, along with juniors Cara Coleman and Laurie Barman all tallied two a piece.
Throughout the match the Lady Indians were positioned well and executed a team total of 11 blocks. Freshman Niki Hroblak took advantage of some extended playing time with four solos and two assisted blocks. Cara Coleman garnered four block assists and Laurie Barman had a solo block and assisted on three more.
On the attack, Newberry feasted off a healthy diet of Brazilian cuisine. Lipsi of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Maia of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, were chief ingredients in the victory. Lipsi led all players with 10 kills, while Maia notched up nine.
Coleman and Barman remained part of the arsenal and combined for 12 kills.
Senior setter Jessica Lopez added 23 assists to go along with eight digs and three kills.
Presbyterian fell to 7-21 on the season and is now at the bottom of the South Atlantic Conference with a 1-9 record. The Lady Blue Hose struggled offensively, mounting only five more kills than errors on the night.
Danielle Gill finished the evening with nine kills and Rachel Lewis chipped in 28 assists.
The Lady Indians continue on the road Friday evening as they venture to Greeneville, Tenn. for a 7 p.m. clash with Tusculum College.
