Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - Newberry College (8-6-2, 2-2-2 SAC) cruised to a 4-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne College (3-11-1, 0-6 SAC) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference women's soccer contest.
Newberry's Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) scored twice and Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) added a goal and two assists to lead the Lady Indians to the win.
Woiwode clinched the Newberry record for points in a career with the four-point performance, now having 85 in her career. Jennifer Walsh held the prior record with 83.
Sarah Barnes (Rolla, Mo.) got things going for Newberry after she scored on a throw-in from the right side. Barnes' toss landed right in front of and then bounced over the head of Lenoir-Rhyne's goalkeeper for the score just 13:40 into the match.
Butler then added Newberry's second and third goals in the 25th and 52nd minutes of play for the commanding, 3-0 advantage.
The second goal came from a strong shot 25 yards out from the left while the third score was a shot from the center just inside the box. Both goals were assisted by Woiwode, who finished off the scoring for Newberry with her team-leading ninth goal of the year at the 58:38 mark.
Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the shutout in goal for Newberry while freshman Katelyn Burwell suffered the loss for the Bears, who are still looking for their first league win.
"We are very happy with the way our defense has been playing lately, and the way they shut out L-R today," said head coach Juan Pablo Favero. The Lady Indian defense has not been scored on in 180 minutes, the team's second longest streak of the season.
"Also, it was nice to see Inga earn the career record for points today. That accomplishment says a lot about Inga's skill, and it really helps the whole team, as that helps our confidence going towards the conference tournament," Favero added.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Mars Hill on Senior Day next Saturday at 2 p.m., while Newberry visits Jefferson City, Tenn., for a 6 p.m., match on Saturday against Carson-Newman.
