BOONE, N.C. – Newberry traveled to Appalachian State to face-off against the Mountaineer grapplers and the Wildcats of Davidson.  Due to miscommunication in scheduling, the dual scheduled against Davidson was cancelled.  Newberry’s rematch from the NC State Duals against Appalachian State had a familiar outcome as the Indians fell short in the 9-40 loss.

Plagued by injuries, the Indians were forced to give up 18 team points with three forfeits coming at the 141, 149, and 184-pound weight classes.  The remaining seven matches also included changes to what has become the Indians normal lineup. 

A demanding match-up at the 157-pound weight class brought some excitement to the dual meet as Brandon Kelly took on No. 19 Scott Evrin of Appalachian State.  This was the third time the two had faced this season, in an equally exhilarating match.  Kelly’s late takedown wasn’t enough though as the undefeated Mountaineer grappler came away victorious in the 5-2 decision.

Putting Newberry on the board was 174-pound Newberry grappler Quinn Tolbert in a dominating match.  Initiating the action through the entire bout, Tolbert defeated Appalachian State’s Edward Hutchinson 8-2. 

In the last individual match-up of the evening, Joey Robinson (133) was able to add six more points to the Indians score with a second period fall.  Robinson recorded a pin at the 4:01 mark in the match against the Mountaineers Tim Goodwin.

The Indians hope to be full strength as they travel to West Liberty, W.V. Friday, February 3, to face West Liberty State.  The Indians hope to gain another win against the fellow east region opponent.
