Lady Indians fall at Wingate, 76-49

WINGATE, N.C. - Wingate streaked to an early lead and never looked back as the Lady Indians were not able to challenge the Bulldogs behind anemic shooting and a Wingate domination of the boards. Newberry (9-6, 1-2 South Atlantic) was led by Tonique Frasier with 15 points while Ashlee Wright added another 14 for Newberry while Tanetra Barrett led Wingate (11-4, 3-0 SAC) with 20 points.

Wingate outrebounded Newberry 47-31, dominating the defensive boards 34-17 while Newberry was unable to put together a serious offensive threat behind 26% shooting from the floor. Newberry struggled from the line, shooting 56% while Wingate went 16-for-17 from the stripe, knocking down 94% of their free throws.

Wingate, who was picked in the preseason to win the conference, held a 48-22 halftime lead behind 16 of Barrett�s 20 points in the game. Wright posted nine points through the halfway mark while Frasier put down seven.

The Scarlet and Gray held Wingate close in the second half, with the Bulldogs only outscoring Newberry by one, 28-27. Wingate only shot 36% in the second period but Newberry only brought down 21% of their shots.

Newberry looks to return to their winning ways next Wednesday, Jan. 18 as the Lady Indians travel to arch-rival Presbyterian College for a 6 p.m., showdown. Wingate travels to Hickory, N.C., to take on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at the same time.
