Presbyterian slips by Newberry Volleyball, 3-1

Box Score

CLINTON, S.C. Cara Coleman and Jamie Foster-Mann once again led the Indians with 10 kills, both hitting .533 on the night but Newberry couldnt shut down a Presbyterian offensive attack that had five members of the Blue Hose record double digit kills as the Indians fell 3-1 Tuesday evening. Game scores were 28-30, 35-33, 17-30 and 19-30.

Newberry (4-5, 0-1 South Atlantic Conference) hit a season high .221 as a team while Presbyterian (8-0, 1-0 SAC) hit .346. Lauren Mason led PC with 20 kills while this weeks South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Jasmin Brown recorded 19 kills for the Blue Hose. The Indians also tied a season high nine team service aces and set a season high seven team block solos on night. The match was the first since 2003 that Newberry has won a game over PC. The Blue Hose have now taken 31 consecutive matches against Newberry.

"It was a good learning experience tonight," said Newberry head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta. "We learned a lot from Presbyterian. We will come back strong from this match. We will be working hard over the next week. We are a different team from last year and we showed that some tonight. We are still learning how to win and how to have a winner's mentality when approaching the game."

The Indians and the Blue Hose each hit .182 in game one as Jessica Lipsi led Newberry with four kills. Brown and Mason each had four kills for PC. Foster-Mann notched two service aces while Coleman had one in the game but Newberry fell, 30-28.

Newberry hit an impressive .386 while PC only hit .298 in an extended game two that witnessed three Indian service aces, one each for Coleman, Lipsi and Katie Stone. Game two witnessed another incredible Indian rally as Newberry was down 17-10 and came back to tie the game at 25. The Indians never gave up the lead in the game after that point but PC did tie it several times, including at 33 each. However, a [Jasmin] Brown attack error and a Coleman kill sealed the game two victory for Newberry, which knotted the match at one game apiece.

Presbyterian shone in game three while the Newberry offensive effort hit a brick wall as the Indians hit -.037 (8 K, 9 E, 27 TA). The Blue Hose hit a tough .294 in the game as Brown led the way with seven kills. PC took game three, 30-17.

Presbyterian continued to roll in game four, hitting .500 while Newberry hit .241. Stone and Alicia Khoury each recorded a service ace in the game while Coleman had three kills, hitting .750 in the game. Unfortunately, Presbyterian notched the 30-19 game victory, sealing the 3-1 match win.

Newberry now has an extended break, not playing again for another week. The Indians return to action with their home opener on Tues., Sept. 13 as they host the Patriots of Francis Marion University in Eleazer Arena. Live stats for that match will be available at www.NewberryIndians.com.
