Lady Indians romp USC Aiken, 5-0

AIKEN, S.C. - Newberry College put three goals on the board in the last 15 minutes, shutting out USC Aiken 5-0 tonight in women's soccer action.  After holding a narrow lead at the break, Newberry picked up the intensity on their way to four second half goals.  The Lady Indians improve to 6-3-1 overall and remain 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.  USC Aiken drops to 3-5-0 overall and are 0-2 in the Peach Belt.  With the win, the Lady Indians hand the Pacers their fifth consecutive loss.

Newberry sophomore Katherine Prete (Colorado Springs, Colo.) opened up the scoring during a tight first half after freshman Alie Brady (Summerville, S.C.) fed the ball from a corner kick in the 29th minute.  The Lady Pacers were held to just one shot on goal before the horn sounded to end the half.

The Lady Pacer defense gave Newberry a tough battle in the second half, but it wasn't enough to even the score.  Instead, the Lady Indians went off on a scoring barrage late in the half.

The first of a four-goal run came as midfielder Lacey Moskos (Charleston, S.C.) passed off quickly to forward Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas), who sent the ball sailing over the head of Pacer goalkeeper Jacquelynn Hart (Aiken, S.C.) in the 67th minute. The next goal came from sophomore Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) who was assisted by freshman Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) in the 74th minute. Red-shirt freshman Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) scored the last two goals, which were less than three minutes apart with five minutes to go in the game. Sophomore Ashleigh Mayer (St. Peters, Mo.) passed off to Butler, who quickly scored in the 85th minute. Butler went on to score with 2:20 on the clock after an assist from freshman Shannon Carosone (Orlando, Fla.).

Hart finished the game with seven saves, while Newberry freshmen golie Joanna Rathbun (Bedford, Texas) saved four in her first collegiate start.

The Lady Indians stay on the road as they travel to Southeast Region No. 3 Tusculum College on October 1st for a 4 p.m. match-up.  USC Aiken prepares for a conference contest against Columbus State on October 1st at 1 p.m.
