Box Score CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The Newberry men's soccer team stayed on the winning track as they defeated the University of Charleston (W. Va.), 3-2, this afternoon on the road. Both teams scored two first half goals, but Newberry's second half score was the difference. With the win, the Indians improve to 3-4-1 overall and 1-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Golden Eagles drop to 1-8 overall.
The Indians fell behind 1-0 early, but were able to even the score when forward Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) converted on his second penalty kick in two games. Midfielder Ricardo Silveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave Newberry the lead with his free kick goal later in the first half. Charleston rallied to beat Indian keeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) once more before the break, making the score 2-2 at halftime.
Newberry's persistence resulted in the go-ahead and game-winning goal in the second half. Forward Edsel Rudder (Arima, Trinidad) was credited with the score after an unusual play transpired. Charleston's golie appeared to push a cross into his own net, but Rudder was awarded the goal.
In his first collegiate start, Dieterich also picked up his first collegiate win.
The Indians wrap-up their five-game road trip as they travel to Brevard College on September 29th. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles also hit the road on September 29th as they make their way to Vienna, W. Va., for a 4 p.m. match-up with Ohio Valley.
