WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry Lady Indians dropped a conference game at Wingate University, 1-0, this afternoon at Wingate University. Newberry was held scoreless for just the third time all season. Bulldog freshman forward Sara Hodgson (Lithonia, Ga.) scored the only goal of the game in the first half. Hodgson headed in a cross from Megan Smith (Farmington, N.M.) in the 38th minute, which proved to be the game-winner.
With the loss, Newberry falls to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference play. Wingate improves to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.
The Wingate defense held the Lady Indians to zero shots on goal, a first for the year, and out shot Newberry 10-6. Newberry goalkeepers Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) and Joanna Rathbun (Bedford, Texas) combined for five saves, while Bulldog keeper Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, N.C.) earned the shut out. Rathburn let in the lone goal of the match.
Up next for Newberry is a road match at USC Aiken on September 28th. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. Wingate travels to Mount Olive on September 27th for a 4 p.m. game.
