Indians shut down Mars Hill, 3-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. The Indians hit .229 on the match and recorded 50 kills as Newberry recorded their most lopsided game win (30-16) since 2004 as they rolled to a 3-0 win over Mars Hill Friday night. Game scores were 30-26, 30-28 and 30-16.

Cara Coleman notched 13 kills for Newberry (6-8, 2-2 South Atlantic) as she hit .429 and had four service aces and two block solos while Kristin Pulone hit .444 and recorded 10 kills for the Indians. Lindsay Phillips led Mars Hill (7-11, 0-3 SAC) with 10 kills. Alicia Khoury had 45 assists for Newberry. Tonya Deese had five kills and five digs for the Scarlet and Gray, hitting .235.

I think we played very well tonight, said Newberry head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta. We served very well and the back row did great. The most important thing was the environment and the cohesiveness. Different people came in and made a difference tonight. We hope to play that well tomorrow against Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Indians got off to a slightly sluggish start, hitting only .118 as Jamie Foster-Mann and Jessica Lipsi led the way with four kills apiece. The Lions hit .150 in the game and recorded five total team blocks on Newberry but four service aces made the difference for Newberry as the Indians won the game by four points, 30-26.

Both teams played well in a second game that saw 17 tie scores and 13 lead changes. Newberry hit .282 while Mars Hill hit .184. Coleman had six kills and two of her four service aces for Newberry and Lipsi had five kills. Four different Lions had three kills for Mars Hill in the game.

Newberry absolutely dominated in game three, hitting .317 while Mars Hill hit .000. Pulone and Coleman had four kills apiece while Foster-Mann had three kills as she hit .600 in the game. Newberry jumped out to a huge lead, going up 21-9 at one point before Mars Hill attempted a comeback, but the Indians were too much for the Lions and took the game and match victory, 30-16. The 14-point victory was the largest margin of victory for the Indians since a 30-16 game three victory over Augusta State in 2004. Newberry won that match 3-0 as well.

The Indians will now host conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne (8-7, 0-3 SAC) Saturday at 1 p.m. in the friendly confines of Eleazer Arena. Lenoir-Rhyne fell to Presbyterian Friday night, 3-0, in Clinton, S.C.
