Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. - Jessica Lipsi notched 16 kills for the Indians Friday afternoon but the Newberry fell short of taming the Jaguars, 3-2. However, senior Kristin Pulone reached a milestone as her nine kills bumped her up to fifth on the Newberry College all-time kill list. Game scores were 21-30, 30-28, 30-27, 27-30, 11-15.
Today was a day for adjustments, said Newberry Head Coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta. We got off to a slow start because our team is still adjusting to the new techniques that we are implementing, which we will build on for the future and will make us a better team overall. As the match went on, the girls started feeling more and more comfortable with the adjustments we are having to make.
Newberry got off to a slow start in game one as the Indians hit -.025 to Augusta State's .184. Senior Tonya Deese led Newberry in her first volleyball match as an Indian in the game with three kills while Jamie Foster-Mann recorded two block assists. The Indians were forced to play catch up as Augusta State jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead and even tied the game on three separate occasions, but were never able to pull ahead.
Game two saw an entirely different set of teams on the court as Newberry and Augusta State switched sides and roles. Lipsi came alive, slamming down seven kills while recording three digs and three block assists. The Indians hit .184 in the game while ASUs hitting percentage dropped to a measly .067 as Newberry knotted the match at one.
Pulone and Foster-Mann led the way in game three with four kills apiece for the Scarlet and Gray, with Pulone also adding two services aces. Pulone jumped to fifth in Newberry Colleges all-time kill list when the score was 23-19 Jaguars as Jessica Lopez set Pulone up for the kill as a part of Newberrys 13-3 run to end and win game three.
ASU fought back in game four, serving up three aces to Newberrys none and outdigging the Indians 22-17. Lipsi once again led Newberry with six of Newberrys 13 kills for the game. Both teams seemed to be working out the first match kinks as Newberry hit .087 to Augusta States .043.
Newberry fell behind 10-5 in game five and fought back to within two at one point, but Augusta States hitting (.300) prevented any sort of comeback to win the match for the Indians as Newberry was only able to hit .143. Pulone and Deese paced Newberry with two kills in the game.
