NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry women’s tennis team fell to the visiting Mars Hill Lions 6-3, in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.  Mars Hill improves to 11-5 (3-1 SAC), while Newberry falls to 2-8 (1-4 SAC).

The Lions of Mars Hill were able to win two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead.  Newberry’s number one doubles team of Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ont.) and Isabel Kreidler (Tuebingen, Germany) defeated the Mars Hill team of Jenny Rogers (Melbourne, Australia) and Nancie Gruber (Bad Rappanau, Germany), 8-3.  The Lions would come back after the initial letdown, as the team of Whitney Stroud (Spindale, N.C.) and Maranda Dillenger (Elkin, N.C.) defeated Newberry’s Bethany Poppe (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas) by a score of 8-6.  Mars Hill would pick up the remaining doubles point by default.

The Lions would go on to take four of the six singles matches en route to the victory.  Gruber, Stroud, and Hebert would collect points for the Lions.  Hartley and Clare would notch points for the Lady Indians in the singles portion of the match.

The Lady Indians are back in action when they host Coker College on April 13th, while Mars Hill returns to the court on April 11th, as they will host SAC rival Catawba.
