Box Score

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Derrick Calkin pitched a seven-hit shutout as third-seeded Carson-Newman blanked No. 7 Newberry 9-0 Friday afternoon in the winners bracket semifinal of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament.

The Eagles (31-22) advance to Saturdays winners bracket final against the winner between Catawba and Wingate to be played at 2 p.m. Newberry (19-34) will face the loser of that contest in an elimination bracket game at 8:15 p.m. tonight.

Carson-Newman got all the offense it would need in the second inning as the Eagles pounded out four of their 15 hits, including Bryce Thomas two-run, two-out double. Kyle Beall connected on a run-scoring double, while Bryan Fowler added a RBI single in the four-run second.

Caulkin improves to 6-5 on the season as he walked one and struck out seven in a masterful complete game effort.

Thomas and Beall each posted 3-for-5 performances, while Brandon Burchfield and Nick Achberger added 2-for-4 efforts.

Newberry was led by T.J. McCords 2-for-3 day, while Matt Webb also posted a 2-for-4 outing.
