NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry women’s team took the visiting Wingate Bulldogs to the two final matches Wednesday afternoon, only to lose 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference action.  Newberry falls to 2-6 (1-2 SAC) on the season, while Wingate improves to 6-7 (2-2 SAC).

It went well in the early going for the Lady Indians, as they raced ahead of Wingate by winning two of the three doubles matches.  In a very entertaining match, Newberry’s number one doubles team of Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario) and Isabel Kreidler (Tuebingen, Germany) defeated Alexis McDaniel (Acworth, Ga.) and Sydney Pallesen (Calgary, Alberta) 9-7.  The Lady Indians picked up another point from the team of Bethany Poppe (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas), as they notched an 8-3 win over Courtney Luce (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Erika Gluckstal (Fort Myers, Fla.).

Wingate’s only doubles point came in the third match, where Newberry was forced to default because of a player absence due to illness.

But Wingate would storm back in the singles matches, taking four of a possible six points.  McDaniel won her match against Hartley 7-5, 6-4 in the battle of the number ones.  Luce would also win her match over Kreidler.  

Newberry would come back to tie the match with consecutive wins by Clare and Poppe in the three and four spots, respectively.  But Wingate would put the match in the bag with a win by Kim Wenstrand (Destin, Fla.) over Newberry’s Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, S.C.) by a score of 6-4, 6-4.  

The Lady Indians are back in action this Friday, April 1st, when they will travel to Tusculum for another SAC showdown.  The match is scheduled for 4:15.
