Lady Indians win first SAC tennis match since 2002 with 6-3 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry women’s tennis team won their first South Atlantic Conference match in almost three years Thursday afternoon, defeating visiting Lenoir-Rhyne College 6-3.  The Lady Indians improve its record to 2-4 overall, and evens its SAC record at 1-1 on the season.

The Lady Indians beat the Lady Bears without the services of Kim Dreiling (Aurora, Colo.), who was out due to illness.  The Lady Indians were forced to forfeit her matches, but held on anyway for the 6-3 victory.

Newberry won two of three doubles matches on the afternoon.  Newberry’s number one team of Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario) and Isabel Kreidler (Tuebingen, Germany) made quick work of their counterparts from Lenoir-Rhyne, Kindra Filson (Hendersonville, N.C.) and McCall Sink (Lexington, N.C.), winning by a score of 8-2.  Newberry’s number two team of Bethany Poppe (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Chanelle Clare (Nassau, Bahamas) won their match over L-R’s number two team of Amy Westmoreland (Martinsville, Va.) and Mary Alice Parlier (Statesville, N.C.), by a score of 8-6.

The Lady Indians would go onto collect four out of a possible six points in singles competition.  Hartley, Kreidler, Clare, and Poppe would all win their matches in straight sets.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s lone point (outside of the two points they were awarded for the absence of Dreiling) came from Ellen Key’s (Statesville, N.C.) 6-3, 6-2 victory over Newberry’s Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, S.C.).

The Lady Indians are back in action on March 30th, when they will host Wingate University for a 2 p.m. match.  L-R plays at Presbyterian tomorrow, March 25th, starting at 10 a.m.
