NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry men’s tennis team picked up its second win of the season, defeating the Pfeiffer University Falcons 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon.  The Indians improve to 2-3 on the season.

“This was a good win for us,” said head coach David Staniford.  “We had two men out sick today, but the team pulled together for a win.” 

Newberry’s number one doubles team of Anthony Rinaldis (Potomac, Va.) and Adam Morehart (Woodstock, Ga.) notched an 8-6 victory in their match.  The number three team of Oliver Elston (Katy, Texas) and Toby Rawlings (Bristol, England) also picked up a win, defeating Pfeiffer’s David Beaver (Albemarle, N.C.) and Daniel Shiflet (Asheboro, N.C.) by a score of 8-0. 

Newberry won four of their six singles matches against Pfeiffer, all in straight sets.  Posting wins for the Indians were Rinaldis, Morehart, Elston, and Rawlings.  Newberry’s number one singles player Jonathan Ward (Sunney, England) lost in straight sets to Pfeiffer’s Kent Whitener (Newton, N.C.) 6-4, 6-4. 

The Indians are back in action this Friday, as Newberry takes on Limestone College at 2 p.m.
