Newberry baseball splits pair of games with Mount Olive in season opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Josh Carter (Goldsboro, N.C./Eastern Wayne HS) had three hits and Matt Rickard's (Burlington, N.C./Walter M. Williams HS) two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth inning as Mount Olive defeated Newberry 6-4 in game two of a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Scarborough Field. In the first game, Matt Webb's (Cheraw, S.C.) two-run double on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the top of the seventh lifted Newberry to a 3-2 victory. The doubleheader marked the season opener for both teams.

In the first game, Mount Olive starter Jonathan McClellan (Windsor, N.C./Bertie HS) and reliever Brett Williams (Wilson, N.C./Ralph L. Fike HS) combined to keep Newberry hitless through five innings, capitalizing on inning-ending double plays in the first and third innings. Mount Olive (1-1) appeared headed to take an early lead, but Newberry center fielder Jamal Kinard (Newberry, S.C.) robbed Rickard of an extra-base hit with a diving catch and threw to second for the double play.

The game was still scoreless until the sixth inning when Webb broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single and eventually scored the game's first run on a single by Dean Walker (Afton, Tenn.). Mount Olive answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Ricky Davis (Lakewood, Wash./Robert E. Lee HS) and three errors by Newberry to take a 2-1 lead. Newberry (1-1) battled back in the seventh as two runners reached on walks and Malcolm McLeod (Chapin, S.C.) beat out a fielder's choice to keep the inning alive. Webb fell behind 0-2 in the count, then lined a pitch into center field to score both runners and put the Indians back on top.

Newberry relief pitcher Will Folk (Charleston, S.C.) retired the Trojans in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save. Starter Russell Haltiwanger (Simpsonville, S.C.) pitched six innings for the win. Both teams finished with four hits apiece.

In the second game, Stephen Nordan (Benson, N.C./Clayton HS) and Carter hit RBI-singles in the bottom of the first to give Mount Olive an early 2-0 lead. The Trojans had five hits in the first inning, one more than in all of game one.

Mount Olive extended its lead in the fifth as Nordan drew a one-out walk and Carter doubled to the center field on a ball Kinard almost chased down. Rickard doubled down the left field line to plate both runners and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Trojans built the lead to 6-0 on an RBI-double by Bobby Northrup (Charlotte, N.C./Providence HS).

Justin Staatz (Woostock, Md./Muscatine CC) worked his way out of two bases-loaded jams to pitch five scoreless innings and pick up the win. Newberry, which left 12 runners on base, scored two runs in each of the final two innings and had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh when Carter knocked down a grounder to first base for the final out.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at Scarborough Field. First pitch is 1 p.m.
