ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson College recorded three pins and two major decisions on its way to a 35-17 victory over Newberry in wrestling action Wednesday night. Newberry’s overall record in dual meets falls to 11-3 on the season.
Newberry’s Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) won in dominant fashion, pinning Anderson’s Tim Sexton in just over three minutes. Washington is coming off of a second-place finish in last weekend’s Builder Invitational. Washington moved up to fifth in this week’s National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) individual wrestling poll.
Quinn Tolbert (Summerville, S.C.) also won his match against Anderson’s Jared Skinner, defeating the Trojan by technical fall. Tolbert is ranked 11th by the NCWA. Wren Moore (West Minister, S.C.) won his match by forfeit.
Indian grappler Trevon Fordham (N. Charleston, S.C.) lost a tough match to Anderson’s Hunter Garner, losing by major decision.
Newberry’s Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) sat out due to lingering effects of an injury suffered at the Builder Invitational.
This Saturday’s home meet between Newberry, Georgia Tech, Catawba, and the Apprentice School has been canceled. The Newberry wrestling team hits that mat again February 10th at UNC Pembroke.
