Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State senior catcher Sam Barth went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs Wednesday afternoon to extend his hitting streak to 43 games and help lead the Diamond Jaguars to a 7-3 victory over Newberry in a non-conference matchup at Jaguar Field.

The victory, the Jags' seventh straight, lifted their record to 8-1, while the loss dropped the Indians to 2-4.

Five different pitchers saw action for ASU, with senior righthander Brett Chandler picking up the win, his first of the season, in relief of starter Dallas LeMaster.Barth led the Jags' 10-hit attack with four hits, including a two-run homer off the scoreboard in the third inning.

Senior leftfielder Brandon Sumlin continued his hot start with a pair of hits and runs scored and three stolen bases. Junior rightfielder Chris Demons registered a pair of hits, including a two-run triple.  No player for the Indians had more than one hit.

ASU took a 2-0 lead in the first when Sumlin reached on an infield single and stole second base. Senior second baseman Lee Rose's bunt single put runners on the corners. Barth then lined the first offering from Newberry starter Pete Stuppiello into right-centerfield for a two-run single.

Newberry pulled even in the top of the third when Anthony Dillenger slapped a two-run homer to right-center, chasing LeMaster from the game. ASU moved back in front 4-2 in the bottom of the frame with Barth's two-run shot to left.

The Indians got within 4-3 in the fifth on Daniel Till's solo shot to left off of Chandler.

The Jags added some breathing room with a three-run eighth inning. Sumlin drew a leadoff walk from Indian reliever Joel Crisp and stole second. Barth singled to center to score Sumlin and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A Dustin Rucker flyout moved Barth over to third. After junior third baseman Garrick McGrath was hit by a pitch, Demons ripped a triple to the fence in right-center, scoring Barth and McGrath.

Newberry is back in action this Saturday when the Indians take on Claflin University.
