JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Indians defeated Carson-Newman, their lone SAC opponent, Wednesday night 30-10.  With two falls and five other solid performances, Newberry maintained a lead throughout the entire meet. 

“It was a great win for us tonight," stated head coach Jason Valek.  "The effort was there although we still have a long way to go to reach our full potential. We will build on this experience and continue to develop as we hope to continue our momentum through the new year."

The Indians got off to an early lead as Willie Jarman accepted a forfeit at 125 pounds putting six team points on the board for Newberry.  Adding three more to the total was Tony Washington.  This was Washington’s first action of the season as he defeated Carson-Newman’s Alex Cate 5-4. 

The first pin of the night came from 149 pound freshman Clay Gray.  The fall came late in the first period against Brad Argabright.  Boosting the team score to 18-6 Alonso Azumendi defeated Justin Ransom in their second meeting of the season. 

During the 174 pound weight class Quinn Tolbert defeated Carson-Newman’s William Campbell 9-3.  The win pushed Tolbert to a 9-4 season record.  Now 9-6 on the season; Dave Bush wrestled solid against Ryan Brock of Carson-Newman for a 6-2 victory. 

Kelly Anundson added six more team points to the board pinning Chuck Robinson of Carson-Newman during the heavyweight bout.  This was Anundson’s fifth pin of the season. 

The match against Carson-Newman was the last dual meet for the Indians before semester break.  Newberry will be traveling to Reno, Nev. to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec 16-17.
