Indians trounce Allen University 114-29

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's basketball team downed the Allen University Lady Yellow Jackets, 114-29 this afternoon at Eleazer Arena. All but one active member of the squad scored, and five players putting up double digits. The Lady Indians improved their record to 5-3, while Allen University falls to 3-6.

Newberry established two school records in the win: fewest points allowed to an opponent, and largest margin of victory.  The previous records were 34 points allowed (most recently to Morris College last Wednesday) and a 60-point victory over Limestone during the 1996-97 season.

The Lady Indians stepped out with an early 33-7 run on the way to a 63-19 halftime lead.  Senior Tonya Deese (Newberry, S.C.) led the team with nine points, while Anita Bulcher (Houston, Ohio) wasn't far behind putting up eight more points.  Not only did Newberry outscore Allen, they also showed amazing talent on the glass by rebounding 33 shots to Allen University's 13.

The second half started out with domination by the Lady Indians.  Newberry put up 23 points before Allen University's junior Shauna Barefield (Jackson, S.C.) put a free throw shot on the board.  After which the Lady Indians let loose by finishing with an 85-point lead, 114-29.

For the game, Newberry was led by both Bulcher and Deese with double digits in points at 18 each and rebounds, with 17 and 10 respectively.  Freshman Cortney Snowden (Augusta, Ga.) put up 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Rounding up the double digit points were both Tonique Fraiser (Walterboro, S.C.) and Chance Stewart (Rougemont, N.C.) who each added 10 to the pile.  Allen University was lead by sophomore Shanna Chapman (Charleston, S.C.) scoring 14 points.  Also with a double digit was junior Barefield with 11.

Next up for the Lady Indians is a trip to Limestone College for a match-up with the Saints at 5:30 p.m. on December 17.
