Presbyterian slips by Newberry, 3-0, in front of record crowd

NEWBERRY, S.C. � Tonya Deese recorded 10 kills for Newberry in front of a school record crowd of 657 in Eleazer Arena Thursday night but the Blue Hose of Presbyterian closed their regular season undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference by edging the Indians, 3-0, Thursday night. Game scores were 22-30, 30-32 and 14-30.

Presbyterian was led by three-time South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Jasmin Brown and teammate Lauren Mason, who each notched 13 kills on the match. Two-time South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Erin Friday put down 12 kills in the match. Serving suffered the Indian attack as Newberry served up five aces but 12 errors while PC had seven service aces and only five service errors. Both teams recorded eight total blocks in the match.

Newberry only hit .131 in the match but held Presbyterian to a hitting percentage of .254, coming from a team that has averaged hitting .326 all season long. Newberry�s Alicia Khoury had 29 assists and 12 digs for the Indians while the Blue Hose�s Rachel Lewisd had 39 assists and 3 service aces for Prebsyterian.

Deese led the Indians with four kills in game one as Newberry hit .300 to PC�s .311. Mason led the Blue Hose with six kills while Friday added five. PC had three aces in the game with no service errors while Newberry had two aces and four errors in the game. The lone block of the game came from Kristin Pulone off an attack by Mason.

Newberry kept game two as close as either team has seen all season, but fell 32-30. Newberry�s Achilles heel was serving, dishing up only two aces but seven errors in the game. The Indians recorded five total blocks in the game to PC�s four with Jamie Foster-Mann leading the way with three blocks assists while PC�s Mason notched two block solos and one block assist. Laurie Barman and Deese each notched five kills for the Indians while Brown put down seven kills in the game for the Blue Hose. PC took game two off a controversial block error call on Foster-Mann. Alicia Khoury had 14 of her 29 assists in game two.

Newberry came out exhausted in game three, with much of the emotional adrenaline lost after game two. The Indians hit -.111 in the game while PC hit .237 and recorded four blocks to Newberry�s two. Lewis and Brown had three kills for PC while five Indians each notched one kill apiece for Newberry in the 30-14 game three loss for the Indians.

Newberry travels to Central, S.C., to play at Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. The Indians will then face Limestone immediately following that match. Presbyterian closes out their regular season and will next compete with the Indians at the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Nov. 12-13 at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Pairings and match times for the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament will be announced early next week.
