NEWBERRY, S.C. –The Newberry wrestling team earned their first dual meet win of its inaugural season defeating the Saints of Limestone College. Winning seven of the ten match ups the Indians came away with a score of 27-11. Several solid performances were the key to Newberry’s victory.
Riddled with injuries at the lower weights, many freshmen were asked to step up for the team. With great expectations for this season, hard work and resilience are a must and that is what was displayed tonight.
“We have been able to overcome injuries by asking others to step up," stated head coach Jason Valek. "The guys have been working hard in practice and it shows in the way that they wrestled tonight. This was our first win as a Division II program and there will be many more to come.”
Limestone came out to an early lead with a 16-0, 6:36, technical fall during the 125 lb weight class. Alvin Simmons (133) answered the Saints win with one of his own, beating Matt Ross of Limestone 6-1 to pick up his first win of the season. At the 141 lb weight class Chris Allen took on Robby Miskelly of Limestone. Allen’s early dominance proved not to be enough when plagued with injury. Miskelly went on to control the third period finishing the match with a score of 10-5.
As with Allen, Clay Gray (149) started the match with great force early on, accumulating a significant amount of riding in the first period, but the second belonged to Limestone’s Joey Federspiel. Down 2-5 entering the third period with riding time no longer in his favor, the match began to heat up once again. With a takedown, Gray brought the match within grasps, but with an escape, penalty point, and riding time Federspiel put three more points on the board for Limestone.
Coming off a great weekend against NC State and The Citadel, Brandon Kelly (157) was ready to improve his ready to 3-0, which he did beating Greg Satterfield of Limestone 20-6. Kelly came out firing with a takedown in the first ten seconds. He followed that up with four more, along with two sets of near-fall points in the first period alone. With three more takedowns and a riding time point coming his way, Kelly finished the match strong putting four more team points on the board for Newberry.
A close match at 165 lbs inched Newberry to within one point of Limestone. Alonso Azumendi battled to a 7-5 decision over the Saints' Joby Shreckhise. Azumendi improved his record to 2-1 on the season, with 174 lb Indian wrestler Quinn Tolbert doing the same. Aggressive from the start, Tolbert dominated the entire match. Accumulating almost four minutes of riding time, he defeated Miles Carey of Limestone with a 16-6 major decision.
Taking note from their teammates, Leighton Ellis (184) and Dave Bush (197) picked up their first wins of the season. Ellis controlled his match against Mike Walsh of Limestone College to pick up a major decision with a score of 14-6. In the 197lb bout it was the Saints' Rob Sater who was the first to score. Bush, however, took the lead at the start of the second, and led the action in the third to come away with a 7-3 decision.
With Newberry leading 21-11 going into the heavyweight match the Indians had the win secured. This did not affect Kelly Anundson’s performance though, as he initiated the action through the first two periods. With Anundson up 15-4 the match was called due to stalling penalties, forty-two seconds into the third period. The disqualification put six more points on the board for the Indians in their 27-11 victory over the Saints of Limestone College.
The Indians next dual meet action will be Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7p.m., against Spartanburg Methodist Junior College in Eleazer Arena.
