Box Score NEWBERRY - Jeffrey Taylor scored for Newberry off a penalty kick in the second overtime in the 104th minute as Newberry defeated West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
Newberry (6-5-2, 1-3-0 South Atlantic Conference) recorded their first overtime win in four tries this season as West Virginia Wesleyan (2-7-1, 0-1-1 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference) competed in their first overtime match of the season. The match witnessed lots of physical play, especially in the second half of regulation, as there were a total of 37 fouls between the two teams and eight cards, seven of which came in the second half.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie after one half of play, with the action going back and forth. Through the first half, West Virginia Wesleyan outshot Newberry 7-6 and the Bobcats had three corner kicks to Newberry's two. The action was slightly physical as the teams had a combined 22 fouls in the first half of play.
The scoreless tie remained at the end of regulation as Newberry was unable to score on a couple of good opportunities. Newberry had 12 shots in the second half to the Bobcats' three. The Indians also made five corner kicks in the second half to West Virginia Wesleyan's one as the Indians had several chances to score.
The first overtime period was relatively uneventful as Newberry only had one real chance at scoring in three shots. The second overtime period was crucial as the referee awarded Jeffrey Taylor a penalty kick after a flagrant West Virginia Wesleyan foul in the box, which he put past Eric Silbaugh for the game winning goal.
The Indians conclude their five-match homestand on Saturday, Oct. 15 in the second match of a doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne. The Lady Indians kick off at 2 p.m. and the Indians expect to begin their match against L-R around 4 p.m.
