Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. � Tonya Deese notched 12 kills and hit a dominating .632 while Cara Coleman had 11 kills and eight block assists as Newberry swept Tusculum for the second time this season, 3-0. Game scores were 30-20, 30-24 and 30-21.
Newberry hit a season-best .282 and held Tusculum to a .079 hitting percentage. The Pioneers were led by Amanda Trent, who notched nine kills and Jessica Salyers who recorded 15 digs.
Newberry got off to a powerful start in game one as they hit .265 to the Pioneers .000. Coleman paced the Indians with five kills. Tusculum kept the game close until the 21-19 mark when Newberry called a timeout and then streaked on a 9-1 run that was capped off by a block solo for Laurie Barman to end the game and give Newberry the 30-20 victory.
Newberry continued to roll in game two as Tonya Deese came alive hitting .566 and notching five kills. Barman notched four kills in a game in which the Indians hit .300 and Tusculum only managed to hit .089. Newberry led 27-20 when Tusculum began to charge back, rattling off four quick points in the makings of a comeback. However, a Kristin Pulone kill snapped the run and Tusculum faced game point as Jean-Marie Kitner made an attack error. Katie Stone made her lone kill of the day, sealing the Indians 30-24 game two victory.
Tonya Deese hit .833 in game five, recording another give kills and Pulone notched four kills as the Indians took game three and the sweep. Coleman recorded four of her eight block assists in the final set and the Indians recorded four service aces in the game. Tusculum recorded a match best .143 hitting percentage in the game but the Indians were too much, hitting .278.
Newberry takes a week off from South Atlantic Conference action and will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., on Thursday, Oct. 13 to face Eckerd College. Tusculum will face conference rival Carson-Newman College on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Carson-Newman.
