Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Sophomores Laurie Barman recorded a career high 18 kills and Jamie Foster-Mann set a career high with five service aces as Newberry defeated Lander 3-1 Tuesday night. The 30-14 game two Indian victory was the largest margin of victory for Newberry since a 30-10 victory over Columbia College in 2002. Newberry (9-9, 4-3 South Atlantic) continues their best start since a 9-8 beginning in 2000. Lander (6-13, 0-5 Peach Belt) was led by Kerri Sorensen with 13 kills while Sara Senn added 10.

“Depth was key tonight,” said Newberry head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta. “We shoed a good balance and positive performance as the strength of our skills came through. We were challenged and got some good rallies and good competition tonight. Our confidence is growing and that came through tonight. Lander served well tonight but we responded well to their tough serving game.”
Game one did not go the Indians way as Lander's Senn notched five kills for the Bearcats, hitting .364. Melissa Trippany added two aces for Lander. Barman led the Indians with three kills, hitting .333 while Pulone added three kills as well. Coleman recorded two of her three aces in the first set. Lander took the game one victory, 30-24.
Newberry vaulted out to an 11-5 lead and never looked back, dominating throughout the entire game. The Indians finished the second game on a 19-7 streak that included a 13-2 Indian run that included four of Foster-Mann's five service aces. Lander was unable to get anything going, hitting -.043 in the game as Barman recorded five kills for the Scarlet and Gray. Newberry tied the match at one with a 30-14 victory, their largest single game victory of the season and largest since 2002.
Game three was a different story as the teams battled back and forth for the match lead. Barman led Newberry with seven kills in the game, hitting a powerful .375. Two of Barman's kills came in the last four points of the game as a Barman kill and a Sorensen attack error gave Newberry the 36-34 victory in the Indians' longest game of the season.
Newberry continued to roll in game four as Tonya Deese showcased the Indians' depth, coming off the bench to record four kills in the game. Coleman and Barman added three kills with Pulone serving up two aces and notching two kills. Sorensen led Lander with four kills but it wasn't enough as Newberry sealed the 3-1 match victory with a 30-23 game four victory.
Newberry continues their three-match home stand as they return to conference action Friday, Oct. 7, hosting Carson-Newman. The match, beginning at 7 p.m., will be Newberry's Salute to the Armed Forces. Lander will return home to Horne Arena at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7 when the Bearcats host Armstrong Atlantic in a Peach Belt Conference game.
