Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry men's soccer team fell 1-0 in a tight match against conference rival Presbyterian College this afternoon at the Newberry Soccer Complex. The Blue Hose notched an early goal off a loose ball, which proved to be enough to outlast the Indians. With the loss, Newberry falls back to .500 with a 7-7-2 overall record and a 1-5 South Atlantic Conference record. Presbyterian improves to 11-5-1 overall and 3-4 in the SAC.
The Indians dominated the game early by keeping the ball away from the Blue Hose attackers. Amidst some very physical play, Newberry managed to out shoot Presbyterian 9-3 in the first half, but were unable to make any scoring threats. The Blue Hose netted the game's only goal in the 23rd minute when midfielder Brandon Tucker (Englewood, Colo.) scrambled to a loose ball with Newberry keeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.), beating him for the unassisted goal. Presbyterian added more pressure throughout the remainder of the half.
Play went back and forth in the second half, as neither team was able to score. Newberry was aided by four second-half corner kicks, but the Indians couldn't capitalize. Presbyterian's Tucker had a golden opportunity to add an insurance goal late in the half, but Linn thwarted his breakaway run with a spectacular save. The Indians' late rally went to no avail.
On the game, the Indians out shot the Blue Hose 17-11 and took six corner kicks to Presbyterian's three. Linn recorded three saves, all in the second half, while Presbyterian goalie Mark Owens (Charleston, S.C.) made six.
Up next for the Indians is senior day on October 29th at 4 p.m., where Newberry is set to face Carson-Newman College in doubleheader action with the women. The Blue Hose head home for their last regular season game against Lander University, also on October 29th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
