Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - Laurie Barman notched 11 kills and the Indians had one of their best blocking matches of the season but Newberry continued to struggle in other aspects of the game as Lenoir-Rhyne dropped the Indians, 3-1, and handed Newberry their worst single-game loss in school history. Cara Coleman had nine kills and eight total blocks for the Indian effort. Game scores were 8-30, 25-30, 30-26 and 27-30.
Newberry (11-13, 5-6 South Atlantic) notched 12 total blocks to L-R�s nine and the Indians� serving woes dried up as Newberry notched four aces and only two errors for a +2 serving differential in the match. But the Scarlet and Gray only hit .116 while the Bears (13-11, 5-6 South Atlantic) hit .254 and the Indians were outdug 62-43. Newberry�s 30-8 loss in game one was the worst single-game loss in school history.
L-R came out firing in game one and never stopped as all 12 Indians saw action in a cycling of positions trying to stem the Bears� onslaught. Angela Danly notched seven kills for L-R and the Bears recorded three blocks to Newberry�s one. Lenoir-Rhyne hit .423 while Newberry hit -.130 in the game.
Newberry fought back in game two as Coleman led with five kills. Newberry hit .286 but Lenoir-Rhyne�s offense continued to roll as they hit .312. Abby Smith paved the way for L-R with five kills while Katie Novacek added another five.
Danley continued to roll in game three for Lenoir-Rhyne with seven kills but the Indians refused to give up, despite playing in front of an increasingly hostile crowd at Shuford Gymnasium. Barman notched five kills for Newberry in the 30-26 game three win.
Game four came down to the wire but it was the effort of the Bears� Smith that won out, with eight kills in the game, as L-R won 30-27. Barman had four kills while Coleman had five blocks in the game.
Newberry next hosts Wingate University on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.
