NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry Lady Indians used a double overtime goal by forward Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) to preserve a 1-0 victory over conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne College. Both teams battled hard throughout, but the Newberry offense was too much in the second overtime period. With the win, the Lady Indians improve to 7-5-1 overall and 3-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears slip to 4-7-3 overall and 2-3 in the SAC.
Both teams struggled for control early in the game, producing few offensive attacks. Newberry put together a few runs late in the first half, but were unable to penetrate the Lenoir-Rhyne goal. The Newberry defense came out firing, however, as they held the Bears to just two shots in the first 45 minutes. The Bears ended the game with just two shots on goal.
The second half proved to be much like the first, as play continued to go back and forth. Both teams were able to get a few more shots off, but nothing materialized. Newberry forward Elyse Clark (Charleston, S.C.), who started after being injured much of the season, had a prime scoring opportunity off a free kick early in the half, but just missed. Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Nicole Ley (Cupertino, Calif.) proved herself as a tough goalkeeper by constantly clearing loose balls out the box. Newberry forward Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) had a scoring chance at the end of the half, but couldn’t convert. Both squads made late rallies, but neither team was able to score, making it 0-0 heading into overtime.
The first overtime period featured a struggle for ball control, but no real offensive threats were made. Woiwode silenced the Bears in the second overtime, as she put home her second overtime game-winner of the season in the 105th minute. Midfielder Alie Brady (Summerville, S.C.) made a run down the sideline, finding Clark in the box, who finally dished off to an open Woiwode for the goal. Brady and Clark were credited with the assists on the play.
The Lady Indians out shot the Bears 14-10 for the game and tallied six corner kicks. In the goal, Ley compiled eight saves while Newberry keeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded two. Beckerle picked up her second shutout of the season in her first game back after missing three games due to injury.
Up next for the Lady Indians is a road trip to Florida as they are set to take on NSCAA/adidas South Region No. 2 University of Tampa on October 21st. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Bears head home for an October 19th match-up with North Carolina-Pembroke. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
