Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Laurie Barman led Newberry with 14 kills and hit .314 while the Indians recorded their most blocks since Sept. 17 but the Scarlet and Gray fell to Eckerd Thursday night, 3-0. Barman also recorded two block solos and three block assists in the conteste while Cara Coleman added one block solo and six block assists. Game scores were 23-30, 21-30 and 22-30.
The Indians hit .128 to Eckerds .250. Andrea Krzystan led the Tritons with 12 kills while Angela White notched 11. White recorded a double-double as she also recorded 11 digs. Leigh Badoyen and Lea Melton each added 10 kills for the Triton effort. For the Indians, Coleman and Jamie Foster-Mann each added five kills.
The 12 total team blocks Newberry recorded Thursday night was the most the team has made since making 15 at Tusculum on Sept. 17 and it was the second consecutive match in which Newberry has made double digit total team blocks.
Serving was crucial in the match as Eckerd notched seven aces and only three errors, giving the Tritons a differential of +4 while Newberry had five aces and eight errors, giving the Indians a serve differential of -3.
One aspect of the Indian defense struggled in the match as Newberry was outdug 52-37, the least amount of digs Newberry has made since the Indians 3-0 defeat at Carson-Newman on Sept. 16. However, another aspect shone through as Newberry tied a season high with four block solos in the match. Barman single-handedly stopped two Triton attacks while Coleman and Kristin Pulone each stopped one as well.
The Indians next return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 as they continue their four-match road swing with a mid-week match at Augusta State. This will be the second time the Jaguars and the Indians have met this season as Newberry will try to redeem themselves from a 3-2 defeat to Augusta State in the first match of the season.
