Newberry rallies to take five-game match from Catawba, 3-2

SALISBURY, N.C. � The Indian wind blew Newberry�s way Saturday morning as the Scarlet and Gray rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Catawba 3-2, their first win over Catawba since 2001. Cara Coleman had 21 kills for Newberry while Christy Stegall recorded a career high 26 digs. Jessica Lipsi added 18 kills and 21 digs for the Scarlet and Gray effort. Game scores were 30-23, 21-30, 22-30, 34-32 and 15-12.

Newberry controlled game one, hitting .200 to Catawba�s .059. Coleman had seven kills, hitting .412, for Newberry while Lipsi added five. Christy Stegall led the defensive effort with seven digs. Melissa Griffith led Catawba with five kills. Newberry took game one from Catawba, 30-23.

Newberry couldn�t put anything together early on in game two, falling behind 22-10. Newberry fought back but Catawba continued to inch forward. Catawba led 29-15 before the Newberry rally sprang to life. Newberry went on a 6-0 run to put the score at a 29-21 Catawba lead before Catawba ended the game with an Andi Henderson kill as Catawba won, 30-21.

The two teams were tied at 17 in game three when Catawba went on an 11-2 run to put them up 28-19. Newberry rattled off three quick points to make it 28-22 but a Lipsi service error gave Catawba game point and an Amanda Nantz kill sealed the 30-22 win for Catawba.

Game four was neck and neck again when, late in the game, a score dispute gave Catawba a 25-23 lead. Catawba then streaked ahead to a 29-23 lead, giving them match point when Newberry began the rally. The Scarlet and Gray fought back on a 7-0 run to put Newberry ahead, 30-29. Catawba fought back and the teams went back and forth before a Barman kill gave Newberry the 34-32 game victory and forced the decisive game five.

Newberry kept rolling to start game five, jumping out to a quick 7-3 lead before Catawba had to call timeout to stop the bleeding. Catawba then fought back to pull within two at match point, a 14-12 Newberry lead. Lipsi notched one more kill on the day as Newberry sealed the win.
