NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College wrestling team absolutely dominated the University of Georgia Quad meet this weekend, beating the likes Clemson, Mercer, and UGa by a combined 155-22. Newberry improves to 11-1 in dual meets this season.
Newberry College defeated Mercer 60-4, Clemson 64-0, and Georgia 31-18 in this weekend’s competition.
In the 149 lbs weight class, Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) won all three of his matches. Also accomplishing this feet for the Indians was Parker Valek (Irmo, S.C.) in the 197 lbs. class, and Quinn Tolbert (Summerville, S.C.). Tolbert and Washington continue to be ranked by the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) as the fifth and ninth best wrestlers in the country, respectively.
The NCWA’s fourth best overall wrestler Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.), won two matches this weekend against Clemson and Georgia. Trevon Fordham (N. Charleston, S.C.) won all three of his matches at the meet, as did Rally Hyrne (Moncks Corner, S.C.), and Wren Moore (West Minister, S.C.).
Newberry’s first home wrestling match in school history will take place this month on the 26th, as Spartanburg Methodist College comes to take on the Indians at 7 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.
