Newberry falls to Presbyterian 3-0 in conference volleyball action

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Presbyterian middle blocker Donja Bobbitt (San Antonio, Texas) recorded 20 kills to lead the Blue Hose over Newberry College, 30-22, 30-21, 30-21, Tuesday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action.  The match was the beginning of conference play for both squads.

Newberry fell victim to a mid-game scoring slump in the first set.  Down 10-11, the Lady Indians could not answer during a 10-2 scoring run by the visitors.  Newberry scored point-for-point with PC the remainder of the game but could not get back in the game.

Presbyterian grabbed the early lead in the second game, but Newberry put up five straight points, going from 8-11 to 13-11, the last two scored on Jessica Lopez (Madison, Wisc.) service aces.  The home team went ahead 17-14, Newberry's biggest lead of the day, and forced PC into taking a timeout.  The Blue Hose responded with a five-point run and never looked back in a nine-point win.

PC used aggressive play to open up a quick ten-point lead at 15-5, and Newberry was never able to cut the lead to less than nine points the rest of the match.

Jamie Foster-Mann (Painted Post, N.Y.) and Kristin Pulone (Diamond Bar, Calif.) led the way offensively for Newberry with seven kills and an assisted block apiece.  Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, S.C.) put together a solid effort for the Scarlet and Gray with six kills and 14 digs.  Lopez had 25 assists, six digs, and four service aces on the night.

Along with Bobbitt, Jasmin Brown (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Erin Friday (Summerville, S.C.) posted double-digit kills for the Blue Hose with 17 and 11, respectively.  Bobbitt and Friday notched 11 digs to go along with their offense.  Setter Erin Winchester (Pickens, S.C.) assisted 51 kills for the visitors.

Newberry travels to St. Petersburg, Fla., to play in the Eckerd College Invitational Friday and Saturday.  Presbyterian travels to Savannah for a two-day tournament at Armstrong Atlantic State University on those same days.
