Lady Indians win 3-1 at Columbia, snap losing streak

Box Score

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Newberry College snapped a six-match losing streak by defeating Columbia College 30-23, (31-33), 30-16, 30-12 in college volleyball action Tuesday night at Godbold Center in Columbia.  The win was the first for Newberry in September, as three other matches were postponed or canceled due to weather concerns.

Junior setter Alicia Khoury (Toledo, Ohio) directed the offense to strong showings in three out of four games.  Khoury got most of the work in Newberry's two-setter offense, assisting 44 kills and putting down six kills herself with attacks that caught the Fighting Koalas off-guard.  Four of her five service aces came during a game two rally that brought Newberry to the brink of victory before Columbia surprised the Lady Indians by rallying for the win.

Newberry used a 7-2 run midway through game one, and then another 7-2 run to break away from the host team when they pulled as close as 23-21.  Columbia turned the tables in the second frame, jumping ahead 18-9 before Newberry mounted a rally to pull ahead 29-25.  The Indians appeared to run out of gas, sputtering at the end to drop the game 33-31.

The visitors responded in the final two games, holding the Koalas to scoring in the teens.  Game three saw Newberry start out 4-0 and then score 12 of the last 18 points to finish strong as well.  The Lady Indians used a 9-1 streak in the final set to send fans to the exit doors and knock the wind out of Columbia.

Sophomore Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, S.C.) had another breakthrough night, racking up 15 kills and 19 digs in the match.  Freshman Adriane Miler (Summerville, S.C.) also compiled double-digit kills and digs with 12 and 15, respectively.  Kristin Pulone (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) dominated the smaller Koalas, killing 12 and 13 balls respectively.  Pulone solo-blocked one ball and dug six others.  Coleman had a hand in three blocks.

No player from Columbia College had double-digit kills.  Christy Newman and Andrea Wooten successfully completed attacks on nine balls.

Newberry looks to retake home court advantage when it hosts Tusculum Friday night in a game that will be audio-broadcast at www.newberryindians.com.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
