Winning is Wunder-ful; Newberry ends skid against Univ. of Charleston, 3-1

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Newberry's four-game losing skid came to a screeching halt Sunday afternoon, as the Indians took care of the University of Charleston (W. Va.) 3-1, at the Newberry Soccer Complex in men's soccer action.  The win propelled Newberry to 3-4 overall.

For the second straight game, in what seems to be a recurring theme with any team in Newberry's region, the match was marked by extremely physical play from both sides, evidenced by the combined 39 fouls between both teams.  The only difference this time was the Indians ability to rise above the muck, forcing the Eagles to play their brand of soccer.

However, the match was no easy task for the Indians, as they were forced to play catch up early as Charleston notched the first goal.  In the 32nd minute, Anthony Greer (Dayton, Ohio) displayed spectacular athleticism to separate himself from the Indian defense, chasing a beautiful ball on the left wing from Adam Prestifilipo.  Greer placed a shot just out of reach of Indian keeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.).

The Eagles taste of victory was short lived, as just 32 seconds later the match was leveled by the foot of Troy Pinckney (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), as he simply beat the Charleston defense with a mixture of blazing speed and good footwork.

After the initial goal, Linn played out of his head, making ten saves in the first half alone, robbing the Eagles of several good looks throughout the period.  Linn had 12 saves on the day.  The half was reached with both teams knotted at one.

The Indians came out hungry in the second half, controlling the midfield and spending a good amount of time in the Eagle territory.  Juan Pablo Wunder (Santiago, Chile) several chances to put in the game-winner, but was bested at times by Charleston keeper Brent Wilson.  But as persistent as he was prolific, Wunder finally scored the game-winner in the 65th minute.  Wunder finished the game with nine shots total, including four shots on goal.

Kyle Rudder (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) bought the Indians some insurance in the 73rd minute, putting the ball in the net, and more importantly putting the game out of reach for the Eagles.  Ricardo Silveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) picked up the assist on the goal.  It was the first goal for Rudder on the season.

The Indians have a chance to get back to .500 this week, on a road swing through West Virginia, taking on Davis & Elkins Friday and West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.
