Lady Indians continue history making stretch, defeat Limestone 5-0

NEWBERRY, S.C.  – It’s only the sixth game of the season, but the Newberry women’s soccer team continues to rewrite the program’s record books, as the Lady Indians defeated the Limestone Saints 5-0.  It was Newberry’s third consecutive shut-out, and fourth consecutive win, both new school records.  Also, their 5-1 start is also good for best in the ten year history of the program.  The Lady Indians relied on Inga Woiwode and Brooke Tumblin, both of whom scored a pair of goals in the match.

“I am very pleased with our intensity this game and our finishing was better as well,” noticed head coach Juan Pablo Favero.  “Defensively we once again did a good job as a team and another shut-out is extremely positive and something the whole team takes pride in.”

The Lady Indians needed only 13 minutes to collect their first goal of the match, off the foot of speedy forward Tumblin.  Adriana Farfan found some space in the midfield where Woiwode was patrolling; Woiwode in-turn sent a beautiful touch into Tumblin for the game winner.

Woiwode then found the net herself, one of two goals on the day, in the 17th minute.  Reigning South Atlantic Conference player of the week Danielle Beckerle punted a ball well past the mid line, finding Farfan who touched the ball ahead to Woiwode for the score.  Farfan had two assists in the contest.  Less than three minute later, Newberry went up 3-0 off the leg of Kristin Parker.  It was Parker’s second goal of the season, with Nicole Nilica providing the assist.

Woiwode struck again just after the intermission, with Beckerle again picking up the assist off a long punt out of the box.  Tumblin closed out the scoring with her second goal of the match in the 71st minute.  Goalkeeper Jennifer Fowler got some valuable time between the posts, making seven saves in 33 minutes of action.

While Favero is pleased with his team’s unprecedented start, he looks ahead and sees stiff challenges for his Lady Indians.

“We have an extremely tough two week stretch coming up against some of the top teams in the SAC, the region and in the nation.  In order to keep this successful streak going, we will have to play better soccer consistently on both ends of the field than what we have done the first two weeks of the season.  I trust we will be up for the challenge ahead and it should be a fun two weeks for our team.”

The Lady Indians resume their SAC schedule on Saturday, traveling to Salisbury, N.C. to take on the 18th ranked Catawba Indians under lights at 7 p.m.
