Box Score 4 ANDERSON, S.C. - Newberry College volleyball just missed a perfect 4-0 start with a loss to host Anderson College at the Anderson Invitational, but still tied for the best record in the tournament at 3-1. Anderson won the tourney title at the Abney Center by virtue of the head-to-head win.
Newberry College's volleyball team opened the season with a 3-1 win Friday over North Greenville College (26-30), 30-16, 30-22, 30-23 at the Anderson Invitational. The 1-0 start was the first of the century for Newberry volleyball and Nicolee Thompson.
The Tribe followed that win with another over N.C. Central by a 3-1 count to open Saturday's play. Newberry used matches of 30-26, 30-27, (24-30), and 32-30 to put away the Eagles and narrowly avoid a fifth game.
The fifth-game match would come against Limestone. Newberry blew out the Saints in games one and three by a combined 60-36 score, but had trouble in the even-numbered matches. The Lady Indians escaped with a two-point win in Game Five. Newberry def. Limestone 30-21, (36-38), 30-15, (26-30), 15-13.
Anderson overpowered the weary visitors in the day's final match with easy 30-15 and 30-24 wins. Newberry's final comeback attempt fell short at 31-29 to end the tournament.
