Newberry's three homers dominate Wingate

Box Score

Back-to-back five-run innings snap an eight-game Newberry losing streak as the Indians defeat Wingate, 17-5, in Sunday afternoon's matchup at Kirkland Field. The Indians avoid the series sweep by putting up their highest point total this season. Newberry improves to 16-23 overall, 4-11 in the South Atlantic Conference. Wingate remains in third place in the SAC at 10-5 despite the loss, and is 17-24 overall.

Two-run homers by Travis Moore (Blythewood, S.C.) and Bobby Locke (Lucasville, OH) and an RBI single from Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C.) in the fifth inning gave the Indians five runs and a lead they would not relinquish.

Newberry duplicated the fifth-inning feat after a three-and-out Wingate sixth. Billy Alm (Pine Plains, N.Y.) started the fireworks with a single to center field. A series of walks by the Wingate pitchers scored a run with only one out on the inning. Easterby came up big again in the sixth with his three RBI double to left field. Matt Webb (Cheraw, S.C.) singled to center to score Easterby.

The Bulldogs posted a big fifth inning as well putting up four runs to give them a brief lead. Tim Bowman (Low Gap, N.C.) had the first single to left field, then an RBI single from Sherman Greer ( Stanfield, N.C.) scored Bowman. A single from David Yount (Forest City, N.C) who went 10-of-13 on the weekend, a triple by Andrew Brockington (Florence, S.C), and single from Kirk Matthews (East Bend, N.C.) earned the final four runs of the game for Wingate.

A two-run homer by Stuart Kay (Greer, S.C.) gave the Indians an initial 2-1 lead in the first inning. The bomb was his third of the weekend. In addition, Kay earned the complete game win on Sunday with a flawless Newberry defense behind him. The Indians acquire their first errorless game in 18 showings.

Newberry plays again at home on Tuesday, April 6th at 6 p.m. as they take on USC Spartanburg in a non-conference affair. The Bulldogs host Francis Marion at that same time.
