Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. - Newberry College's baseball team brought the offense to Henderon Field on Sunday, hitting seven home runs to defeat Mars Hill 14-5 and secure seventh place in the conference. Newberry finishes the season 21-29 with a 6-15 conference record, while Mars Hill drops to 15-35, 5-16 in conference, and falls into eighth place.
The game was closely played until the fourth inning when Newberry scored five runs to take a 7-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homerun from Dustin Smith (Conway, S.C.). Both teams scored single runs in the fifth and then MHC plated two runs in the sixth inning to trim the deficit to 8-4. The Indians put the game away in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on five hits and one Lion error. Bobby Locke (Lucasville, Ohio) hit a three run homerun in the inning. MHC's Matt Russell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the scoring.
Locke and Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) led Newberry offensively. Locke went 3-for-5 with two homeruns, four RBI and three runs scored. Dillenger went 3-for-4 with two homeruns, three RBI and three runs scored. Stuart Kay (Greer, S.C.) was 1-for-5 with a solo homerun. That homerun was Kay�s 27th and it set a new Indian record for career homeruns. Russell Haltiwanger (Simpsonville, S.C.) threw six innings to pick up the win (4-6) for Newberry. Tyson Azevedo (Charleston, S.C.) picked up his ninth save on the year throwing the last three innings.
Phillips led the Lions going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Jeff Mayo (Enfield, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Gary Lee (Chesapeake, Va.) took the loss (3-7) on the mound for the Lions.
The first round of the SAC Tournament will be held at Knights' Stadium in Fort Mill. Eighth-seed Mars Hill will face one-seed Catawba College at 8:15 p.m. Thursday. Seventh-seed Newberry will play second-place Tusculum at 4:30 on Thursday.
