NEWBERRY, S.C. - Carson-Newman College used a game-winning tenth inning triple from Brian Chapman (Caryville, Tenn.) to secure game one, and a shutout performance from Chad Gillis (Erwin, Tenn.) in the nightcap to pass Newberry College in the South Atlantic Conference standings Saturday afternoon at Kirkland Field.

Carson-Newman advances to 15-16-1 and 3-5 in conference play. Newberry drops to 12-15 and 2-6 SAC, but can pull even with the Eagles with a win in Sunday's finale at 1 p.m.

Game One: Carson-Newman 6, Newberry 4 (10 innings)
Chapman tripled to right center field to drive in leadoff hitter Nathan Gravley (Cartersville, Ga.), then scored himself off a Derrick Calkin (Maryville, Tenn.) single to give the Eagles a two-run edge after 9 � innings. Newberry put two runners on base with no outs, but stranded both to give Carson-Newman the extra-inning win.

Coming from a 4-1 deficit, the Indians scored a single run in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to send the game past regulation. Billy Alm (Pine Plains, N.Y.) sac flied to the center fielder to plate Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, S.C.) for the tying run.

Eagle pitchers Nick Jacobs and Brandon Wright collected the first win and save, respectively, of each player's season. Newberry's Chris Griffin (Cayce, S.C.) was charged with the loss, pitching two frames in relief of Alm.

Dustin Smith (Conway, S.C.) started the scoring for the Tribe with a solo shot to right in the fourth, marking his team-leading fifth homerun.

Game Two: Carson-Newman 6, Newberry 0
Gillis allowed five Indian hits over seven innings to get the complete game shutout and elevate his season record to 4-2. The righthanded junior faced four more batters than the minimum to pick up his fourth win. In the fourth and seventh innings, C-N turned double plays that erased NC base runners, Newberry stranding just four runners in the game.

The Eagles hung three on the board in both the fourth and fifth innings, managing seven of their eight hits during that span. Newberry did its part to allow the runs, committing four of its five errors, throwing two wild pitches, and walking a batter in those innings.

Offensively, Jonathan Mary (Maryville, Tenn.) was three-for-four in the second game of the twinbill, while Gravley, Chapman, Calkin and T.J. Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) each collected a RBI. First baseman Travis Moore (Blythewood, S.C.) was the only Indian with more than one hit, going two-for-three at the dish.
