NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College exploded for seven runs in the second inning, then held off a feisty Anderson College team to defeat the Trojans 9-8 in baseball action Friday evening at Kirkland Field. The win was the third straight for Newberry (12-13, 2-4 South Atlantic Conference), while Anderson (6-19, 0-8 CVAC) has its losing streak extended to seven games.
The Indians notched five hits off Anderson starter Brian Devereaux (Hollywood, Fla.), capped off with a Dustin Smith (Conway, S.C.) RBI triple to score Newberry's seventh run of the inning. Dean Walker (Afton, Tenn.) doubled to bat in the first run, and three singles and a base on balls accounted for the other runs.
Entering the bottom of the fifth, Newberry's Travis Moore (Blythewood, S.C.) broke a 7-7 tie with a two-RBI homer that proved to be the game-winning hit. Anderson scored once more in the seventh from a Jessie Whiteside (Beaufort, S.C.) sacrifice fly, but Ty Rollins (Columbia, S.C.) held the Trojans in check for his first save of the year. Jamie Maynes (Columbia, S.C.) picked up the win, his first decision in three appearances.
Anderson's Kyle Lewis (Irmo, S.C.) made things interesting in the top of the third, tripling to center field to score three, pulling Anderson within three runs at 7-4. Lewis was two-for-four at the plate and scored once. Jason Jones (South Boston, Va.) scored two runners and Whiteside batted in two as well.
