Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College swept Lander by a single run in each game of Wednesday's college baseball action at Kirkland Field. The 8-7 and 3-2 wins give Newberry the season series against the number 21 Bearcats. Lander won the March 3 matchup, interestingly enough, by a single run in extra innings.
Game 1: Newberry 8, Lander 7 (10 innings)
The Indians scored clutch runs in the seventh and tenth to prolong, then win, the opening game of the doubleheader 8-7. Dustin Smith's (Conway, S.C.) dropped shot to center field with bases loaded scored the game-winning run with two outs. The error was the second of Lander's tenth inning.
Newberry rallied from a 6-3 deficit to score a pair of runs in the sixth and the tying run in the seventh to extend the game to extra innings. Smith was the hero in the seventh inning as well, sending Corey Watkins' last pitch over left field to tie the game. The home run was Smith's fourth this season. Lander's William Faulkner put the Bearcats on top 7-6 in the tenth with a solo shot, only to watch the Indians rally for the win in the bottom of the inning.
Game 2: Newberry 3, Lander 2
Stuart Kay (Greer, S.C.) broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with his third home run of the season. Smith scored the game-winning run later that inning, running from first on Dean Walker's (Afton, Tenn.) mishandled single to right field.
The Bearcats made it interesting in the final inning, scoring one with two outs, but reliever Tyson Azevedo (Charleston, S.C.) picked up his sixth save of the year by popping up pinch hitter Jason Spivey to end the game. Azevedo, primarily a closer, recorded his first win of the year in game one of the twinbill.
Newberry plays Anderson College in its next baseball action Friday at 2:30 p.m., while Lander faces Columbus State on the road on Saturday.
