Newberry wrestling dominates at Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – Newberry College dominated both contests in a quad match held at Catawba College, defeating Southern Virginia 60-3, and knocking off the host Indians 52-6 Wednesday night.  Newberry improves to 5-1 on the season.

“The momentum that we gained by defeating Limestone carried over in a big way in tonight’s match,” said head coach Jason Valek.  “The kids are continuing to develop and with continued improvement we should be poised to make a run at the national championship in March.”

Leading the way for the Indians was Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) and Quinn Tolbert (Summerville, S.C.).  Young defeated both his opponents by pin, scoring 6-0 decisions against Southern Virginia and Catawba.  Tolbert, ranked by the National Club Wrestling Assocation as the tenth best wrestler in the nation, won by pin and forfeit.  Out of 22 total matches at the meet, Newberry shutout their opponent in 12 of those matches.

Next up for the Indians is the prestigious Maryville Duals Tournament in Tennessee, on the campus of Maryville College.
