Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - It was Senior Night at Newberry College for the Lady Indian volleyball team Friday night, but the freshmen from Newberry had their way against Southern Wesleyan at Eleazer Arena, sweeping the Warriors 19-18-23 in college volleyball action.
Jamie Foster-Mann (Painted Post, N.Y.) led Newberry (9-18, 3-11 South Atlantic Conference) with 10 kills and two blocks, followed closely by fellow freshman Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) with nine kills and two blocks.
Seniors Amanda Van Pelt (Linville, N.C.) and Tiffany Walzer (Mendota, Ill.) made the most of their final home game, playing the full match and recording nine and four kills, respectively. Walzer notched five digs and four assists in the contest.
Newberry never trailed in the first game, using two six-point runs to move past Southern Wesleyan 30-19. The lone Newberry deficit in game two came at 6-5, but the Indians roared back to 11-6 and then jumped ahead 17-8 to cruise to the 12-point victory.
The home team faced a stiff challenge in the final set, going down 8-4 and then 11-8. Behind the serves of setter Alicia Khoury (Toledo, Ohio), Newberry fired off 11 straight points and forced SWU to exhaust both timeouts. The Warriors were knocked down but not out, rallying to as close as 24-22, but the Indians scored six of the next seven to end the match.
SWU was paced by senior Katrina Hegeman's (Miami, Fla.) nine kills and eight digs. Karey Kelley (Pickens, S.C.) showed her triple threat prowess with four service aces, six kills, and seven digs.
Newberry closes out its regular season at St. Andrew's Presbyterian College Tuesday night, then faces Lenoir-Rhyne in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Wednesday. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
